“I’m so grateful to Sakhi for being a support to me in a way my family couldn’t. Sakhi is there for me, they are helping me start over.”

Nazia is a 39 year old Bangladeshi woman who has lived in Queens almost all her life. When she entered Sakhi’s doors in 2015, it was because her husband of almost 20 years had become emotionally, verbally, physically, and financially abusive. She feared for herself and her two young children, both under the age of 10. She felt such relief at being able to tell her story to a caring listener, and began to feel there may be a way forward. At Sakhi, Nazia’s advocate worked tirelessly to support her in securing an attorney for her divorce, child support, and order of protection. It is a long, ongoing process that has been a strain for her, but one Nazia says she could not have gone through were it not for the incredible support her advocate provided.

This past year, Nazia was able to receive mental health counseling at Sakhi. She says this was one of the most critical parts of her healing process and her understanding of her own journey towards independence and self care. Nazia attended Sakhi’s client events with her children, like our day out in Coney Island, and began to build friendships and support systems in Sakhi’s survivor network. This past fall, in one of her most exciting developments so far, Nazia secured employment through a Sakhi career fair. This was a pivotal moment for her, as she had not had a job since 2009. Nazia now works as a residential supporter at an organization that supports survivors of violence, where she helps other women who are healing from abuse and violence. She is on her way to financial stability, and to building a new life for herself and her children. In the new year, Nazia is looking forward to continuing to build her financial literacy and finally moving out into a new home with her children.
