Survivorship has had an important spotlight in our national consciousness. Spurred by the allegations against multiple public figures, our country is finally having a candid, meaningful conversation about different forms of abuse, the pain that almost always results from such abuse and the challenges of truly healing thereafter. Significantly, we are discussing what it means to hold abusers accountable and build communities of care, respect and trust. At Sakhi, the survivors we work with experience many of these challenges, but also the complexities of being immigrant women of color in America. We are committed, today more than ever, to fight for and with these women, and to help ensure we offer a safe space where all people can live with true dignity and hope.

As we at Sakhi look to the new year, we’re thinking critically about this current cultural and political moment and what it means for our community – from protecting and supporting survivors to fighting back against xenophobia to uplifting the voices that are so often forgotten. We are strategizing how to grow and strengthen our services for the women we serve, while also breaking the cycle of violence through our youth programming. We are announcing a number of community events we have on the horizon. We are eager to continue creating more spaces where you can join us to learn about the issues most important to you, and where we can gather as friends to celebrate one another. In the immediate future, we look forward to seeing you onApril 6th at our annual gala, where we will be honoring Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, two time Academy Award and three time Emmy Award winning documentary filmmaker. Sakhi cannot do this work without you, and we humbly thank you for your continued support. Together, we will continue to stand together and build a bright, resilient 2018!
