As we continue to learn more details surrounding the violence that occurred over the past few days in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay, we find it imperative to underscore the deeply interconnected relationship between gun violence and intimate partner violence.
Over 60% of mass shootings in the United States are linked to domestic violence. Last year, 50% of the known South Asian lives lost to gender-based violence were due to gun violence or homicide.
It is impossible to separate these events from the root causes of patriarchy and state-sanctioned violence. As we process this news, we are thankful to AAPI organizations that are working alongside us to ensure that community-based and culturally-relevant responses remain at the forefront of broader conversations about violence.
